How to Prepare for Your Engagement Portrait Session (So They Actually Feel Like You)
From a Tampa wedding photographer who cares about your story, not just your photos.
Planning how to prepare for engagement photos should feel like a break from wedding planning, not another thing to stress about.
This season is full of anticipation, excitement, and a lot of emotion. Your engagement photos are about documenting that, not forcing something that doesn’t feel natural.
If you’re wondering how to prepare for engagement photos in Tampa, Clearwater Beach, or anywhere in the Tampa Bay area and beyond, this guide will help you feel confident going into your session and actually enjoy the experience.
Hi, I’m Maddy. I’m was a 2024 bride and a wedding photographer right here in Tampa, FL, with over 250 weddings documented all over the United States. I don’t just focus on how your photos look. I care about what they mean. The places, the people, the memories, and the little things that make your story yours.
We want this to be an experience, not just an engagement portrait session.
This is what I walk my couples through, so their engagement photos feel effortless, personal, and actually like them.
How to Choose a Meaningful Location for Your Engagement Photos
The easiest way to make your engagement photos feel personal is to choose a place that already means something to you.
That could look like:
- Clearwater Beach where you had your first date
- A park you walk every weekend
- Your favorite downtown Tampa spots
- Your home
You don’t need the most popular location. You need one that feels like your story. That’s what makes your photos hit differently.
If you’re still deciding, you can always explore more inspiration from past sessions on our engagement portfolio.
What to Wear for Engagement Photos (Without Overthinking It)
Your outfits should support the moment, not distract from it.
The goal is simple:
- You feel comfortable
- You feel confident
- You still feel like yourselves
You do not need to match perfectly.
Instead:
- Stick to a cohesive color palette
- Lean into your own personal styles
- Choose mostly solids, with a subtle pattern if it fits your style
If you are unsure, lay your outfits out next to each other on a bed. Seeing everything together helps you visualize it as one look.
You can always send outfit ideas while you are shopping. That is part of the process, too.
A quick note on color:
Avoid large amounts of bright yellow or green (think highlighter green). It can reflect onto skin tones in a way that does not photograph well. Softer tones like mustard or pale yellow are a better option.
Should You Do Hair and Makeup for Engagement Photos?
If you are planning a hair and makeup trial, try to schedule it on the same day as your engagement session.
This allows you to:
- See how your makeup looks in photographs
- Get an idea of how well your hair and makeup will hold up on your wedding day
- Feel more confident in front of the camera
- Get the most out of that appointment and turn it into a date! After all, your engagement portraits should be an experience!

Engagement Photo Details You Don’t Want to Forget
Your engagement ring will be in a lot of photos.
Getting it professionally cleaned beforehand makes a noticeable difference.
Also:
- Keep nails clean and simple
- Your hands will be featured more than you think
- Assure wrinkles are out of the cloths. It is a lot more time consuming that people realize, and not always possible to fix in Photoshop. Some photographers have a vanity edit fee that applies to this type of thing due to the workload it can add.
Best Time of Day for Engagement Photos in Tampa Bay
Lighting plays a big role in how your photos feel.
In Tampa Bay, here is what that looks like:
Dawn / Sunrise
- Soft, pastel tones
- Light and airy feel
- A quieter, slower environment
Golden Hour (before sunset)
- Warm, glowing light
- Richer, more vibrant color
Neither is better. It depends on the look and feel you are drawn to.
That being said, lighting is something we are very intentional about at Maddness Photography. With experience photographing in all kinds of environments and conditions, we are able to create beautiful, intentional images at any time of day when needed.
If your schedule, location, or vision calls for something outside of traditional lighting times, we know how to work with it and guide you through it. You can see an example of this in our Downtown Tampa engagement session, photographed in the middle of the day.
How to Prepare Before Your Engagement Session
This part matters more than most people expect.
Make sure you:
- Eat before your session
- Stay hydrated
- Get a full night of sleep
Florida heat combined with low blood sugar is not ideal. It also helps to avoid alcohol the night before, as it can lead to:
- Dehydration
- Redness
- Puffiness
The goal is to feel good and look good.
Engagement Photos Should Be an Experience, Not Just a Session
This is the part that matters most.
Your engagement session is not just about getting photos for save-the-dates or checking something off your list.
It is about documenting:
- The places that mean something to you
- The things you love doing together
- The people who are part of your story
- The memories you are building right now
We want this to be an experience, not just an engagement portrait session.
We approach every session with that in mind.
Not just placing you in a location, but helping you experience something together and capturing it as it naturally unfolds.
Because years from now, you will not just want to remember what it looked like.
You will want to remember what it felt like.
What Your Engagement Photos Should Really Capture
Your engagement session is not about perfect photos. It is about capturing what this season actually feels like.
- The in-between moments
- The laughter
- The way you naturally interact
That is what you will care about years from now when looking back at albums.
