How to Stay Connected During Wedding Planning
Wedding planning can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Here are practical ways to stay connected, reduce stress, and protect your relationship throughout your engagement.
You're Planning a Wedding. Don't Forget to Plan for Your Marriage.
Getting engaged is one of the most exciting seasons of life.
Suddenly, there are venues to tour, vendors to hire, guest lists to create, budgets to manage, and what feels like a thousand little decisions that all need to be made immediately.
Wedding planning is exciting, but it can also become all-consuming. I’ve seen couples spend months talking about timelines, florals, invitations, and seating charts while barely making time to enjoy each other.
The truth is that your wedding is important. But your relationship is even more important.
After photographing hundreds of weddings across Tampa Bay and all throughout the United States, I’ve learned that the couples who enjoy engagement season the most are often the ones who intentionally create space for their relationship alongside the wedding planning.
Schedule Wedding-Free Date Nights
One of the easiest ways to stay connected is to schedule time together where wedding planning is completely off limits. No guest lists. No budgets. No vendor emails. No timelines. Just the two of you.
Go explore a museum, take a cooking class, or walk through a local market. Try a new restaurant or stay home and paint terrible portraits of each other. The activity itself matters less than creating intentional time together.

Set Aside a Weekly Wedding Planning Meeting
This may sound strange, but creating a dedicated time for wedding planning often helps prevent it from taking over every conversation. This does not need to be weekly- but bi-weekly at most would really help.
Choose one evening each week to discuss wedding decisions. Review your to-do list. Talk about the budget. Make decisions together. Then, when the meeting is over, give yourselves permission to simply be a couple again.
Many couples find this reduces stress because wedding conversations stop appearing unexpectedly during every dinner, car ride, and weekend outing.
Stop Comparing Your Wedding to Everyone Else's
Pinterest can be inspiring (but more often than not, you do not see the budget attached or if the wedding is real or if it is AI).
Instagram can be inspiring, but it can also make you feel like you’re somehow falling behind.
Every couple has different priorities. Every family has different dynamics. Every budget is different. The goal isn’t to recreate someone else’s wedding. The goal is to create a celebration that feels meaningful to the two of you.
When comparison starts stealing your joy, it’s usually a good reminder to step away from social media and focus on what actually matters.
Give Each Other Grace
Wedding planning can bring out stress in unexpected ways. Family opinions, budget conversations, decision fatigue, busy schedules. Please, if you only take away one thing from this: it’s normal.
There will likely be moments where one of you feels overwhelmed, frustrated, or exhausted. Remember that you’re on the same team. The goal isn’t to win an argument about place cards, napkin colors, or timelines. The goal is to build a life together. Approach challenges as partners rather than opponents – you are on the same team, and the decision is the issue, not each other.
Dream About Your Marriage Instead of Your Wedding
Marriage is the real adventure. This might be the most important date night on the list. Go somewhere quiet, leave the wedding planning at home… Talk about your future.
- What traditions do you want to create?
- What adventures do you want to have?
- What kind of home do you want to build?
- What does a great marriage look like to each of you?
- The wedding lasts a day.
Let me say it one more time for the people in the back… The marriage is the real adventure.
Before You Say "I Do"
After photographing hundreds of weddings across Tampa Bay, I’ve noticed something…
The couples who seem the most relaxed, connected, and present on their wedding day aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets or the most elaborate celebrations.
They’re often the couples who intentionally invested in their relationship long before the wedding day arrived.
They made time for each other during engagement season. They protected date nights. They had difficult conversations about the future. Many participated in premarital counseling, worked through expectations together, and built a strong foundation before walking down the aisle.
Premarital counseling is one of the best investments a couple can make. It creates space to discuss communication, finances, family dynamics, conflict resolution, future goals, and expectations before those topics become challenges. Time and time again, I’ve seen couples walk into their wedding day with greater confidence and peace because they’ve intentionally prepared for the marriage, not just the wedding.
So plan the wedding, but more importantly… PLAN THE MARRIAGE
Dream big. Get excited. And, don’t forget to invest in the relationship at the center of it all.
Every floral arrangement, timeline, and reception detail will eventually become a memory. The marriage you’re building together is what remains long after the wedding day is over.
Every once in a while, put the guest list away, close the laptop, and go create a memory together. Years from now, those are often the moments you’ll treasure most.
